Thomson Reuters is delighted to announce the third year of the prestigious Tax & Accounting Excellence Awards; the pinnacle of recognition for trans-Tasman tax and accounting professionals.

These Awards aim to recognize excellence across firms and individuals in the expertise of tax and accounting throughout Australia and New Zealand; providing both accounting firms and corporations with the opportunity to self nominate across a range of categories.

Award recipients will be decided by an independent Award judging panel. Winners will be invited to an exclusive presentation dinner in November, 2015.

CFO of the Year

This award is open to registered directors of all organisations who have dedicated overall responsibility for finance. Evidence of the following to a total maximum of 1000 words should be shown in entries:

Yvonne Howie

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, NEW SOUTH WALES, THE CEO INSTITUTE
An experienced CEO and non-executive director, Yvonne is CEO, NSW for The CEO Institute. Formed in 1992, it’s a peer-membership organisation for CEOs who connect with 1,000 peers nationally in a supportive, confidential environment. In 2011, it became the world’s first global certification body for CEOs.

Michelle de Niese

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE CORPORATE TAX ASSOCIATION
Michelle de Niese has been at the Corporate Tax Association (CTA) since 2005. The CTA represents the taxation interests of about 110 of Australia’s largest companies.

Prior to taking on the role as Executive Director of the CTA in January this year, she worked as the Assistant Director for over 9 years.

Michelle is the first woman to lead the CTA in its 25 year history. She is also the youngest executive director and the first lawyer to hold the position.

Prior to her time at the CTA Michelle worked at Minter Ellison in their Melbourne tax team. Michelle started her career at the Australian Taxation Office, where she worked in the Large Business and International business line and the Tax Counsel Network.

Michelle has extensive experience as an external stakeholder in the development of Australia’s tax policy and law, as well as aspects of tax administration. Michelle is a member of numerous consultation groups, including the National Tax Liaison Group (NTLG), the Large Business Liaison Group, the Consultative Steering Committee and a number of other specific issue consultation groups.

Michelle studied at Monash University where she obtained a combined Arts Law degree. She also holds a Masters in Taxation Law and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

She has two young daughters and a long standing husband who happily occupy most her spare time, however she finds time for catching up with friends, cooking and the occasional cello performance.

Michael Croker

TAX AUSTRALIA LEADER, CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
Michael is responsible for leading the Australian taxation policy and advocacy work with federal and state governments, the Australian Taxation Office and other tax-related regulatory bodies.

Prior to his current role, Michael led the team which designs, develops and delivers the tax, superannuation and financial advisory services training program at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. He also provided technical and training design expertise to the development of the tax module of the CA Program.

Before joining Chartered Accountants in July 2012, he was responsible for tax research, knowledge management and the corporate tax law training syllabus within PwC Australia in a career spanning 28 years (21 years as a Partner with PwC’s Tax Technical Knowledge Centre).

He has lectured in post-graduate tax subjects at The University of Sydney, and is a former member of the Tax Module Advisory Panel for the CA Program.

Throughout his career, he has been regularly involved in the tax consultation process with senior officials in Treasury and the Australian Taxation Office. He is a former Chair and Member of the Chartered Accountants’ Tax Technical Committee.

Paul Drum

HEAD OF POLICY AT CPA AUSTRALIA
Paul Drum FCPA is the Head of Policy at CPA Australia. CPA Australia has over 150,000 members in 127 countries. He has worked in the tax and business policy arena for over 30 years, principally in Australia, but also in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and New Zealand. As head of policy at CPA Australia he works with a team that considers taxation, superannuation, financial planning, financial reporting, audit and assurance, business management and economic policy. He is actively involved in organisational representation and advocacy initiatives with various governments, and their committees and agencies. Paul is a fellow member of CPA Australia, a Chartered Tax Adviser, and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is also the former Chairman of Directors for the Association of Accounting Technicians (Australia), and CPA Australia’s leading spokesperson on tax policy, law and administration issues in the Australian media.

Dale Pinto

PROFESSOR OF TAXATION LAW HEAD, DEPARTMENT OF TAXATION, CURTIN LAW SCHOOL
Dale Pinto is a Professor of Taxation Law at Curtin University’s Law School in Western Australia. Dale has been a member of CPA Australia’s Centre of Tax Excellence and is currently Chair of the Taxation Institute’s Education, Examinations and Quality Assurance Board (EEQAB). He is the author/co-author of numerous books, refereed articles and national and international conference papers, and is on the editorial board of a number of journals as well as being the Editor-in-Chief of several refereed journals. Dale served as an inaugural member of the National Tax Practitioners Board and is a current member of the Board of Taxation’s Advisory Panel and the ATO’s Tax Technical Panel.
